The Brink [of Madness] Act 1, Scene 1

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

Got you. Thanks. Styrius, I still think it is a nice trick :)
I still suggest Ke'Sha Jack and Axid join the others in case Axid's trap won't work on all the creatures.

[ooc] Sorry for the delay[/ooc]

Axid gives no outward indication that he notices anything as he begins to climb down the ladder where Ke'Sha and Jack were investigating. After mentally warning the others, he concentrates; exerting his will over the very fabric of existence. A door-shaped portal opens along the floor like a trap door, an odd greyish-silver surface shimmering. A cry of surprise of a guteral nature is quickly cut off before it sounds again far in the darkness off the side of the caldera-like chamber.

Jag and Allikhain begin to move towards the chain ladder, the former ascending as the later mutters in the darkness. Using the meager light from the Dimensional Door, she targets the one area her human eyes can see in the dark... the open hatch. An explosion of golden glitter bursts above the hatch, scattering sparkling flecks that dazzle the eye. Another cry can be heard from below and two figures, outlined in glitter, climb out on either side of the hatch; avoiding the Dimensional door. The lanky outlines stand as tall as Landro's 9 ft height and seem to be carrying long pole-like objects with large spheres on one end...

Meanwhile, below, Ke'Sha and Jack make haste back to towards the group; climbing most of the way back up in their rush despite the halfling's shorter stature.

Ke'Sha climbs as fast as he can mentally using Rror senses to see what's happening up there. Seeing the creatures he readies his minions for battle, all readies their weapons as one with a metallic 'whoosh', while he himself uttering few grotesque words almost silently followed by the command 'Enter!' in common hoping the creatures have killed enough humanoids of the outer world to understand few words in common.
As he does that, 'Boney' eyes glow intensely, his jaw opens, it's skeletal hand points to the dimension door and it's head snaps abruptly towards the glittering creature, while the command appears to sound from the skeleton mouth, 'ENTER!', in a booming voice, a moment later the echoes returning from the cavern walls repeatedly.

======================================================
(OOC: Hope all is fine. BTW, in mid July I'll be on vacation for about a month and not sure if I'll post.

Hope the right eerie atmosphere of the undead control was created.

Ke'Sha using Rror to see and hear what's going on up there while using imbue with spell ability to cast 'Command' through 'Boney' the skeleton.
Assuming he can see well enough the dimension door and how the creature avoids it, the command is described best to explain he wants the creature to enter the dimension door. Not sure if 'jump-in' counts as one word or more. ;)

Initiative for Ke'Sha (the undead are always last, right? And if I'll have time to cast alaracity they will have Ke'Sha init):
[1d10]=10
I forgot everything about 2nd ed initiative... is it 1d10? Does the reaction adjustment affect it? And I think you need small numbers and not big ones, right? So.. Damn!?

In case it is relevant, attacks and damage of the minions:
Ho attack: [1d20]=3
Rror atk: [1d20]=19 Dmg: [4d4]=9

'Zum' atk : [1d20]=18, Dmg: [1d8]=7

Skeletons: Skeletons Atk: [_4d20]=(5+1+2+10)=18 Dmg: [_4d6]=(2+1+1+2)=6 (ignore the sum, just wanted to roll everything together)
Oh damn! Rattle is down, so only three skeletons.

Gur:
Initiative: Gur init: [1d10]=2
Attaks: Gur Atk: [_3d20]=(10+18+10)=38 Dmg: [1d2]=2, [1d2]=1, [1d4]=2

If Gur hit, then there is poison

So need to scratch out 'command' and count 1 level of spells using imbue with..

Jag will continue to climb as much as he can without losing his chance to cast a spell.(He is trying to get to a point where he can use his boots before hitting the ground.)

He will cast Magic Missile on the Target on his right, unless others have started to focus on another target.
_[5d4]=14 +4 = 18.
[OOC] Damage!!! lol.[OOC]

[Yep, 1d10 is for initiative. For that lower is faster and reaction adjustment does not affect it (it affects surprise however). Zombies always go last but i rolled init for the 3 remaining skels.]

Binky dear, time to make yourself scarce. Allikhain says as she begins casting a spell. The strange little 2-dimensional-looking shadow turns sideways and vanishes from sight. The necromancer sprinkles some granite dust around herself and her skin turns grey and hardens before resuming to a normal pallor. She then begins to climb the ladder away from the suspicious glittering creatures on the ground, reaching just beneath Jagrinder... The Tusked elf is likewise muttering a magical mnemonic. A host of flashing bolts of force streak from his outstretched hand at one of the glittering creatures, which Yowls loudly in pain as they slam home. The undead stand around passively as if utterly unaffected by the goings on. Jag continues to climb, accompanied by his mirror images clinging to the ladder at different heights and angles like some synchronized ensemble.

Gur wings his way invisibly towards the same target, scratching and biting at the glittering creature. His claws barely make purchase on the tough hide, but it seems to shake off the poison. Axid Peeks over the very edge of the shaft leading to the iron door and focuses on the lead troll. His will reaches out to seize control of it, but struggles to activate the new power while maintaining the portal. Jack climbs up quietly behind him, seemingly ready to sneak above when the opportunity presents itself.

Far below in the tunnel Ke'Sha closes his eyes and peers through those of the zombified bear. Having a view of the struggle, he quickly spots the two glittering invisible creatures and the faintly glowing Dimensional Door of Axid's creation. He gives a quick order for his minions to engage the creatures coming from the new tunnel, and the undead snap to attention as one in an ominous display. Seizing direct control of one skeleton he speaks a word of Command at the lead troll: Enter!, pointing to the shimmering doorway. The being ignores the order and the skeletons move forward to attack it. The bony remains fail to make solid contact with the creature, one even falling to the ground clumsily. The glittering foe steps past the ineffectual undead and strikes with a great polearm at the Firbolg warrior! Well trained and agile, Landro easily avoids the attempt and the enemy becomes visible... It's a Troll, wielding some sort of long iron rod with a wide globe of black on the end!

Yet another glittering figure climbs from the shaft and approaches, also ignoring the skeletons. Like its fellow it strikes at the warrior, but again Landro proves too agile and the second troll becomes visible to all. The third glittering figure moves as if to engage the Firbolg as well, and attempts to squeeze between his allies. A fatal misstep sends it plummeting into the Dimensional Door, it's bestial scream cut off abruptly before it is continued once again far above and away!

In the midst of the melee none see or hear yet another creature climb above as the zombies slowly shamble towards their foes... that is until with a mighty CRASH and the sound of glass breaking a fourth troll appears from nowhere as it smashes its weapon against the Zombified Ogre! The undead staggers, the damage from the blow only a fraction of the hazard as a large, black pudding like creature begins to try to engulf it!!! The troll quickly drops the ruined weapon as the amorphous blob of blackness begins to feed upon the ogre! The sound and scent of sizzling flesh begins to fill the room, but the ogre swings wildly at the troll to no effect.

Landro brings his massive sword to bear, the weapon itself easily taller than every other member of the party, and cuts the lead troll nearly in two! The gangly monster collapses to the ground, motionless. Zum and Rror shamble forwards, each scoring a sound blow against the other troll facing off with the Firbolg; damaging the enemy badly. The rise and fall of the Firbolg's blade again makes short work of the troll, and now two lay strewn about...

"Trolls, we need fire or acid! To make sure they stay down!"

He will use Flame Arrow on the two downed Trolls if noone else has done so by the time it comes to cast.
Or he will use it on two of the alive ones if the downed ones have been burned some how.

"Just throw their bodies to the dimension door! They can heal on the other side. Keep their weapons from the live one." Ke'Sha mentally thinks to all and indeed instruct on 'Skiny' the skeleton and 'Zum' to do just that.
He uses the 'Boney' to cast 'Undead Regeneration' on Ho, his bones flashes green as he touches Ho and the monstrous zombie rotten meat starts to grow back, bones becomes whole and his bulk restores, all the while he instructs 'Limb-ur' who fell to the ground to stand and attack the living troll. Gur holds the fallen trolls weapons and raising the globes, drags them away from the group and turns invisible to secure them. "Smart!" Ke'Sha compliments. "One of us need to be!" Gur "compliments" back!

================================================================================================
(OOC: Ke'Sha answered Jag immediately, so if his suggestion is taken, will Jag spare his spells? Can he?

Skel 1 touches Ho and heals it. [2d4+17]=3+17=20
Skel 2 stands up and if has a chance will attack the enemy (I think it is only t5 that still moves) Atk: [1d20]=17 Dmg: [1d6]=6
Skel 3 and Zum will throw the fallen trolls to the dimension door. (if possible at the same action and have automatic hit they will cut off their heads first. It might be interesting to mix between the heads and the bodies of the trolls... Ke'Sha would think to himself.)

Can Ho get away from the pudding and attack? Pudding has attack of opportunity? Anyway, if he can move faster than the pudding he will avoid it and try to attack the troll. If he can't he will attack the pudding and try to still get away so he won't be swallowed.

Allikhain descends the ladder and summons a Flaming Sphere of magical energy beside the troll attacking Ho. The monstrous creature howls in pain. Flailing wildly it crushes one of the nearby skeletons and takes a wild swipe at the other as it approaches, but the troll loses its balance and falls to the ground.

The newly arrived skeleton begins to move its bony arms as Ke-Sha prepares to heal the ogre. Before he can complete the spell, the black pudding continues its assault on the zombie ogre, dizzolving it's rotting body into uselessness and beyond repair! From high on the ladder a pair of Flaming Arrows streak from Jag's hand and strike each of the downed trolls, burning and further damaging the putrid flesh. Gur vanishes once again and attempts to drag one of the unused pole weapons out of range, but seems to be having trouble. Rassin, Frazzin, fiddle-f5cking, piece! Of! $#i7 !! he curses colorfully, only able to drag it a few feet.

Axid concentrates on the prone troll, reaching out with his mind. He siezes the creature and compells him to begin crawling towards the Dimensional Door, but the troll is too strong! Jack climbs past Axid, careful not to disturb the mentalist, and creeps silently onto the battlefield as he sets up an ambush. The other skeleton near Landro tries to drag one of the downed trolls to the glowing portal, but the creature is far too heavy for it to do so unaided.

Seemingly out of nowhere two more trolls appear as they swing their iron staffs at Landro! One lands a forceful blow accompanied by the racket of shattering glass as a second black pudding is revealed! The amorphous creature burns Landro, who cries out in pain! The Firbolg immediately retalliates by cutting the pudding down with a single sweep of his Giant 2-Handed sword! His second stroke cuts the troll nearly in half as he puts his assailants down with grim efficiency. The crash of glass sounds out a few feet away as yet another troll appears, this one having struck Rror! A massive black pudding begins to greedily devour the Zombified Bear!

Zum joins the other skeleton in attempting to drag the downed troll and between the two of them they make marginal progress (5 feet)

Axid seeing the diminishing returns on keeping the portal open, lets it go. The prone troll being a tad strong to control he focuses on the newest opportunity, fire.[1d20]=10 Axid seizes the fire on a burning troll close to Landro and causes the flames to get bigger and burn. He moves the flame to the closest unprone troll. He attempts a strike of the flame on the troll. Att: [1d20]=11 Dam: [1d6]=3 psp cost 6 / maint 3/rnd

[OOC] I understand there is no more dimension door. Pity throwing the bodies off didn't work. I had another idea: Casting stoneskin on the trolls spheres of glass. :) but it requires touch and many stoneskins... so not realistic. Also: apparently the undead have no weapons... If they head they could be used to chop off the downed trolls heads. [/OOC]

Irritated by the destruction of Ho, Ke'Sha tries to save Rror instead by sending 'Boney' close to Rror and far from the black pudding. He instructs 'Skiny' and 'Zum' to attack the troll near Rror if not for damage at least for distraction, while Rror himself retreats from the pudding and joins the attack on the troll.

========================================================================================
(OOC:
[2d4+17]=5+17=22, Skiny: atk [1d20]=1 dmg [1d6]=4 Zum: atk [1d20]=1 dmg [1d8]=7 Rror: atk [1d20]=8 dmg [4d4]=11

Ha ha! Amazing distraction! Both Skiny and Zum wildly waves their limbs collapse to each other and fall to the ground! I'm sure it will make the trolls wonder what they are up about and lose their focus in battle! :) )

After Axid is done with his Sphere, he will cast Animate Flame on it.

Singing in his head to the group.
"From a haze came a rage of thunder
Distant signs of darkness on the way
Fading cries scream of pain and hunger
But in the night the light will guide your way"

He will then get it to go park on the two downed trolls by Landro, but not on Landro.
